Tonight I spoke with a web marketing firm’s sales person and he tried selling me search engine optimization services. The first keyword he showcased consisted of three terms “keyword1 keyword2 keyword3″ and the client ranked first on Google. Anything more than one keyword, I am not impressed.

Here are some of his lines I recalled from the conversation on the offered SEO services.

• We make sure every page is optimized with unique titles, keywords and descriptions.
• We find unique keyword terms for you.
• We get you links for link popularity.
• We are not selling products, I don’t see how ranking for search engine optimization would work into this conversation.
• No you can’t choose your keywords, we develop a keyword list for you to target.
• We have this website analyzer tool and your website is scoring a 120 out of 300.
• Basic packages start at 450. A premium service package runs from 3500 to 10000 depending on your site needs.
• You are asking a lot of technical ideas thats over my head.
• Everyone’s left the office here, and I got to go.

I had to let him go gently because I was not interested in their SEO services which was clearly a semi scam for any unwitting non SEO knowledgeable person. I checked their work and the websites he showed; and they were clearly not optimized but contained BS meta information, and unnecessary CSS bloating up the page. Who needs unique keywords that drive 1-2 searches a month upon checking up the keyword search volume.

Very important rule is that you need to rank well for any services your are selling regardless if it not retail or a physical product. And if I can’t choose what to rank for, then why would I want to pay for your services?

In all honesty, I was just messing with him because all I do at work everyday is SEO and he still wanted to do a follow-up call with his supervisor.
