The next wave of directories are the bid directories, innovated by KingoftheBill. Reprogrammed and sold to the masses at an affordable price at $24.95 by phpLinkBid. The current version can only handle alphabetical ordering, while the next release is slated and reprogrammed to the much requested categories instead of ABC ordering of listings.

How it works:

  • The more you bid, the higher a listing appears.
  • It is a level playing field among your peers.
  • Bidding often starts as low as one dollar.
  • Payments are automatically attached to PayPal accounts.

Information on future developments of the script can be found on the phpLinkBid Forums. Users are generally ecstatic with the script. Also, the forum provides timely support on installation issues and responses to feature requests.

The original introduction to the script can be found on the DigitalPoint forums phpLinkBid discussions and gotten rave reviews from users and script owners.

Pros for directory owners:

  • This is something new and affordable that makes it easy for link buyers to participate in.
  • Generally resulting in being a better revenue generating model than existing directory scripts.
  • Script pays for itself after a few link buyers bid for position.

Cons for directory owners:

  • Current version of an alphabetical listing classifies the script as a link farm. (However, this is being addressed by the future release - “The update will introduce categories in admin, you can set categories for all the links, define your categories, etc. then turn on category mode.”)

I am in total agreement that the ones that merely categorize the sites alphabetically are not really any more than a link farm. I’m still waiting to see how Google views the ones with a true category structure. It is one thing to say you are charging for a review, I wonder how they view paying for placement. Obviously, the motivation of being the highest bidder is to be on the front page. The question is can you make the argument that you are paying that fee for more views and not higher Page Rank.
