Link Condom
Published April 14th, 2007 in WordPressA link condom is very safe according to Google, because it prevents the usual transmission of page rank among promiscuous link whores. Wikipedia wears a link condom proudly and penetrates safely when they link to reference sources or link whores who spam Wikipedia entries. However, some bloggers, webmasters and fellow SEOs misapply the link condom and put it on every out bound link like idiots.
The equivalent HTML code of the link condom is the “no follow” attribute tag. Originally created to fight blog spam, but made the usage obsolete with other anti-spam tools. A good webmaster do not use link condoms, because they are proud to spread their link love and seeds around to pretty comments who get through the moderation body guards / blog bouncers such as Akismet.
13 Reasons Why NoFollow Tags Suck
- Good article on the abuse of the link condom. And how AIDS is not real (kidding). Informative post on the history, and the future ramifications on the spread of misinformation.
- See a list of bloggers that have removed their link condoms and enjoying the freedom it brings. A new growth of commentators who contribute to help building their blogs into better content. In addition, a “U COMMENT, I FOLLOW” logo is available to help promote link love and incestuous linking among blogs.
To better visualize the condom, you need to use a browser extension that highlights the NoFollow links. The searchstatus extension for FireFox is excellent. Below is a visual from the Matt Cutts blog with every external link surrounded by a condom.

I agree I think when Google decided to incorporate the nofollow tag they had more than just blog spam in mind. Now mike cutts is telling people that if your using paid links you should use the nofollow to let Google know! If a paid link is relevant does it matter if it’s paid or not. It really makes you think was the nofollow introduced with something else in mind. It hasn’t help blog spam at all. So I decided that I would no longer comment on blogs or read any blog that had nonfollow in it. I like your blog so far an I will continue to read comment in the future. You just won yourself a reader!
