Keyword Trackers and Suggestion Tools
Published February 17th, 2007 in Interesting SitesA list of keyword generators, trackers and suggestion sites. The information is scattered around on public SEM and SEO forums, but hard to find for the beginner search engine optimizer. Consider it a quick SEO tutorial if the list helps in your projects or optimization work. To open the websites in a new window, use Shift + Click on the links.
- Digital Point - Simply one of the best tools in the market to track all your keyword rankings across the three major search engines. My recommendation is use it for tracking keywords only as tracking back links slow the update process by a few hours. Track your own sites as well as your competitors, and continue to work on areas where your keywords need improvement in ranking.
- Google Adwords - a good starting point, but the tool supplies limited long tail keyword variations. Type in Viagra and you will know by seeing the limited results. A powerful way to make use of the synonyms is to combine it into the phrase generation tool with the Good Keywords standalone application. Then you have unlimited keywords at your disposal. The tool also provides a solid overview of the available ad inventory you may want to capitalize on as an AdSense publisher.
- Good Keywords - a standalone application to track keyword suggestions, misspelled words, keyword density analysis, phrase generation, link popularity checks, and helps to organize keywords. All these features are part of the free version of the software. If you feel a need to upgrade to their gold version, you get access to the keyword research library, filters, competing top URLs, PPC bid explorer, and a library of trigger words for powerful copy writing.
- Keyword Discovery - apply for the free trial version. Their tools are highly recommended by search marketing industry talking heads Jill Whalen and Andy Beal.
- Keyword Finder - nice tool that provides a projected yearly search volume, down to hourly search averages along with the amount of Google search results to determine competition. With a smaller group of search results, then it is easier to rank for those targeted keywords.
- Keyword Spy - find out the keywords being bid on by your competitors, and their usual positions to data mine a profitable high converting keyword list for PPC or SEO campaigns.
- SEO Book - a powerful keyword research tool with links to additional research from free sections of WordTracker and KeyWord Discovery.
- SEOMoz - keyword difficulty tool to determine how hard it is to rank well based on an in-house proprietary algorithm. The report generation is slow and may take up to several minutes as these tools are often used by search marketing consultants to further an understanding of search optimization while reaffirming what they already expect as a result.
- Spyfu - a powerful tool to include into your arsenal. Search by keyword and it will provide a complete picture of the industry with Adwords results, organic results, additional keyword terms bought and related terms. Search by domain and it will provide their previous keyword bids, organic results, organic competitors and top ad competitors.
- Quintura - helps you visualize the keywords through related word clouds. Great help when you are stuck on writing copy or generating long-tail keywords.
- Hittail - the success of the concept is simple, help people track how their web pages are found without having them run through hoops (such as FTP web logs, launch complicated reports). It attracts the non-power users, casual masses who want to understand their visitors and expand on content that hit on the long tail of web traffic.
- Ventio Google Position - why limit yourself to a 1000 keywords query allocated by Google. With this tool, you have unlimited search on keywords you think your site should be ranking for - perfect for competitive analysis of keywords ranking for your competitors.
- Vurr - simple keyword suggestion tool. It uses data sample from March 1, 2006 to May 31, 2006 from AOL users. It provides an accurate sample of the US population search based on 650,000+ unique users.
- Webceo - offers three versions of a standalone software application for the use of SEM and SEO professionals. Try the free edition to see how it meets your needs, then invest in the other editions if necessary.
- Webuildpages Anchor Text - very important tool to study the anchor text of your competitors, or to see if your websites are building back links using targeted keywords. It cannot be stressed more than enough that proper anchor text is essential for SEO.
- Word Tracker - definitely give their free trial a shot to see how you like the tool before investing your money into the service.
- WordZe - a premium keyword research tool that has full import functionalities to help you find monthly search volumes quickly. In addition, it is able to provide you a sense of how competitive keywords are in terms of trying to rank for them.
- Yahoo Overture - provides the recent months search volumes for specified keywords on the Yahoo search engine. Very good tool giving you what you need in terms of information to start building websites for Viagra or building ad campaigns around their provided search volumes.
It is not necessary to make use of every keyword suggestion tool in the market as a lot of them offer redundant functionalities. Although it is important to know how to combine their usage for effective management of your keywords whether you are a publisher, an advertiser, or simply trying to get your foot wet in search marketing.
Other lower tier keyword tools to consider are the following:
- iWebTool - provides ten search results for and entered keyword. Very bare bones look at keywords.
- Keyword Count - a quick basic word count of keywords on a page, and provides percentage breakdown in comparison to the web page content.
- Keyword Density - analyzes the keyword density of website content and web pages. The tool can be much improved.
- Nichebot - a premium service, not exactly sure what it does as it looks more of a consolidator of different services. Also offers a free daily email of niche a day with the monthly traffic and high PPC bid price to give you an understanding of different markets.
- SeoBench Keyword Analyzer - an on-page analyzer of the keyword density that search engines calculate for keyword relevance when they visit websites.
- Webconfs Keyword Playground - enter a keyword and it will provide results order by searches per month in descending order. Fast, no nonsense usage.

Thanks for compiling this information. I have tried the various tools. I love the Keyword Finder. Apparently the tool has now has more features since this post. It now gives you competition data for both the keyword string and phrase. Best of all, I noticed it only includes sites with all the keywords in the title and anchor text.
It also now has an advanced tool that will also give you the total results and KEI!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing it
Keyword Finder is a good tool because it also provides lower volume search terms. I tend to refer back this page often because I forget their URLs.
I have included Hittail into the list, let me know what you think. Have been using it over a week and like it more than examining boring web logs.
Updated all the links to open to a new window to make it more useful. Even I tend to refer back to this list often when working on SEO research. Make sure to bookmark it and leave a comment or two.
Can also give KeywordSpy.com a try for a keyword research tool, with results actually reflecting what advertisers are using at the current time.
I am always using the “Digital Point” to check out the keyword ranking which is always exact. I love it.
