One thing that came to mind after the semi flooding this morning is how decrepit the New York internal structures have become. On sunny days when everything is fine, we don’t realize these things because everyone is going about their every day lives. However, when things are strange and out of the ordinary, our senses become heightened and pick up on things that would never cross our minds.

Day started with flooding where the sewer drainage was all backed up by the downpour. Then this rain entered into the subway system bringing out all the disgusting muck and water bugs onto the platform. I had never seen the subways flooded over a foot. The rain shuts down all trains going through the Roosevelt station causing everyone to exit the train and march to the next station to catch the seven line which runs above ground. All the human cattle foolishly gathered near the middle, and trying to force themselves onto the train while a cop screams on the top of his lungs “People, let them exit the train before you get in. Why make the situation worst when your job can wait.” What he didn’t realize is that a majority of riders are cattle, getting from point A to point B and always on time.

After the morning, the worst was to come basically reinforcing the idea of how deteriorated New York City infrastructure has become. At 6 PM, a large steam pipe exploded killing one person and injuring over 30 people. Initial thoughts was that it could have been a terrorist attack, but city officials quickly dismissed that idea to provide initial calm to an otherwise chaotic chain of events. The city needs to take a deep look at itself, and start fixing the city infrastructure instead of building new residential developments over a dying city.

Venturing through Harlem and the Bronx into the pocketed Little Italy area above 180’s, and seeing all the under developed areas right outside the city is sad. What the hell is going on? While we squander billions of dollars in a foreign country fighting an illegitimate war, that same money could have went in to poor neighborhoods.

We as a country is very messed up in terms of lifting the overall population out of poverty. Instead the US economy relies heavily on creating a permanent working class by providing them with poor education (on a near retardation level) and even poorer resources to help themselves get out of their plight.

When I was younger, I don’t see these things nor did I understand it. But every single day, the people cleaning the parks, the maintenance workers are all black. If you were to take a walk in Flushing Meadows Park on a weekend, not one Spanish, Asian, or White person were in the group preparing the park.

This is a big social injustice done in by the current education system that treats the poor like dirt. A system where a school does not have any resources due to the lower property taxes of poorer neighborhoods. All European educations systems got rid of this a long time ago and students coming out of their public education systems are top notch compared to the United States’ public schools.
