Deceptive Advertising - Delta Ads

Coming across the Delta Ads on the MTA made me realize how deceptive the marketing strategy was. Ads that say Delta is changing for the better with display screens behind every chair. There were a total of three ads which I recall clearly and made me snicker at how deceptively bad it was for Delta’s image if more travelers would actually comment on the advertising.

Ad 1 - Access to thousands of MP3 and quality music: If you did fly Delta, you would realize that you need to pay $2 for a set of head phones to enjoy it. Or they could add to the advertising copy to mention “must bring your own head phone”.

Ad 2 - Photo of display screen with HBO logo on lower right corner: If you did fly Delta, you would realize the show selection is not free. In fact the satellite service offers less than what you get on public television with no sound unless you buy their head phones.

Ad 3 - Display with poker game: If you did fly Delta, you would realize only text trivia (1 question + 4 answer choices) is free. There is only 1 game for free. Did I forget to mention the touch screen is not very accurate if you do decide to pay for the games.

If these Delta ads are meant to entice vacationing families to fly, they will eventually leave a bad taste and bad reviews due to its deception and half truths. There’s absolutely no need to nickel and dime families with kids on a long flight when they thought music, HBO, and games were all going to be free. Otherwise, they could have purchase the cheapest flight on a competing airline and gotten the same amenities.
