More Backlinks Than You Need
Published August 16th, 2006 in Submit a SiteYour million dollar website project just finished, now what? Without the proper marketing and backlink building strategies, the website might as well have never been built. We are going to tackle a few techniques most webmaster are well aware in getting quick backlinks. These techniques have been written about many times over by others, but it is well worth repeating and listed in terms of value.
Free Directory Submissions - there are literally thousands upon thousands of SEO friendly directories that will accept your site and list them quickly. A good starting point is the websites listed on the right hand column under: Useful SEO Sites.
- DigitalPoint forum consists of a directory owner’s community that work tirelessly to promote new and free directories to the public in the interest of building strong content for their own directories. It is also a great way to interact with directory owners if you encounter any issues during the submission process.
- DirectoryCritic site aggregates all the new directory sites that are announced through DigitalPoint or directly submitted to the site. The listing is separated into General Directory Lists (Free, Paid, Recip, Deep Links and Articles) and Niche Directory Lists (many categories). Has a Directory Tracking System feature to track all your submissions by website also.
- Info Vilesilencer site produced the original list of SEO friendly directories that everyone submitted to and replicated throughout the internet. Today it is still highly regarded as one of the best sites to find free directories to submit to because the list is updated on a regular basis with new sites add and sites that turned paid or reciprocal required removed. An excellent feature is the excel spreadsheet produced by the site which allows you to go through submissions at your own pace.
- DMOZ is still one of the best directories to get listed because it is free with very high page strength. If your site is of high quality, it will eventually be listed given time like 3-6 months. If it is utter junk, don’t even waste your time and the editors’ time.
After your sites have been completely submitted to all these free directory sites (the combined total should be at least 1300 free), and listed. Your site should hold at least a page rank of 4 on the next Google update if you had completed all these free submissions. Don’t forget to use Roboform to automate the form filling process.
Article Submissions – very similar to press releases but submitted to different article depositories where others will find your article to post on their sites thus giving a link back to your site because it was your created content. If you have a good staff writer, this is as good of a back link building strategy as any because depending on what your site specialize or sells, the writer can pump out multiple articles dealing with related products and services. Content articles allow more leeway than press releases as the format is less rigid. A well written article will get the recognition your site deserves. Start with a long list found at Directorycritic Article Directory List (over 300+ sites to submit to.) Note: A press release also falls into this category but not as cost effective since the lifespan of the press release is relatively short.
Create Unique Content – original articles or blogs work great as search engines like content food. Build tools that visitors use often is good for traffic, and site branding. For example: a BMI calculator, a mortgage calculator, and tools along those lines. Very unique product offerings will also get your site noticed, for example: Wooden Memory Sticks.
Reciprocal Link Building – the granddaddy of all back link building strategies that got sites noticed by search engines before there were free directories, and article submission sites. The process was simple, you link to my site, and I will link to yours. Now that search engines have gotten smarter about the process, it works better when the sites that exchange links are relevant. A gambling site exchanging with a pharmacy site has little value. A good start is LinkMarket - I used to be an annual subscriber but it took a lot of work considering how many cheaters in the system went unchecked. Today many link directory tools allow you to automate the whole process of reciprocal linking and you can let it run by itself with little maintenance.
Paid Directory Submissions – this category consist of paid for inclusion directories where annual fees can hit a few thousand dollars easily. The cheapest directories are $5 per year, and the most expensive is the Yahoo! Directory at $299 per year. I would avoid this unless your site is already spending thousands of dollars every month on PPC. A good list of paid directories ranked according to their page strength can be found at AvivaDirectory Strongest Directories.
Purchase Text Link Ads Via Link Brokers – some sites specialize in getting your site listed on high PR sites. These brokers charge a premium. For example a PR4 link with your anchor text can cost $40 per month. There are many unethical sellers of high PR pages; if you are a buyer do extensive research on the sites that are going to list you. More information can be found at Text Link Brokers.

I second the recommendation for the Vile Silencer and Directory Critic lists. I rely on both of those to update the list for my automatic directory submitter. Directory Critic seems to have a lot more new directories in it, but that could just be because the critieria of Vile Silencer is stricter.
Directory critic and digitalpoint forums are my recommendations.
