Google Update
Published September 29th, 2006 in Search ManipulationAs you have already figured, the Google pagerank update is upon us when you see the different pagerank tool bars changing on the familiar sites you visit daily. I actually hate the pagerank game because it distorts the amount of work that goes into websites only to have Google decide if the site is good enough to play in their sandbox. And then every webmaster is a pagerank whore with the thinking that a pagerank 0 site is not worth trading links with, no matter how established or entrenched the site’s keyword positions are on the search engines. The one thing I fear with the update is that the sites in question will not be able to grow as fast as I had originally planned with the proper marketing.
Oh well, thank goodness there are other venues of online marketing other than search engine marketing through an increasing pagerank. If you have customers, make sure you are utilizing email newsletter marketing as well. Keep an active blog, even if it a pagerank zero, because you will be surprise at how well it ranks regardless of the little green bar. Stay active in the forums where your signature is constantly being seen by many community members who frequently read new threads.
Use http://livepr.raketforskning.com/ to see your live pagerank throughout all the different Google datacenters. However, I would advise on not letting PR dictate the way you operate your websites, as long as you constantly work on them there is really nothing to fear. Gaining more favorable keyword positions is better than any increases in PR, so keep your focus on important keywords instead.

So Google, please keep the pagerank for your internal use only and allow webmasters to better focus on tuning up their websites with better content than chasing the ever elusive increase of PR points. And besides, 99% of websites have inflated pagerank through link building and link development tricks. Links can be bought to inflate PR, please kill the PR program and do something like Alexa to indicate how popular websites are instead. A high pagerank site with zero traffic is a problem, where as a zero pagerank site with high traffic is great. I prefer the latter scenario wouldn’t you?
