Google and YouTube

Google made a nice acquisition of YouTube for $1.65 billion and turned Sequoia’s initial $11.5 million investment into $480 million. Very nice jackpot for Sequoia in less than one year. According to the deal, YouTube will continue to operate independently.

Chad and Steve grew the company to $1.65 billion in less than two years. They are the only video site to get it right in offering a good user experience. Yahoo spent billions on Broadcast.com and failed miserably several years before YouTube even came onto the scene. The Broadcast.com domain does nothing except take you back to Yahoo, does that mean they kill the project and wrote it off as a lost? Most likely.

When you think of the competition YouTube faced against Google Video, Yahoo Video, MSN Video, even sites as iFilm and won; then you know they had something special and were unmatched by any of their competitors. All comes back to the positive user experience that YouTube delivered and were able to grow their user base even more. This is an important lesson for directories as well to deliver on a better user experience for submitters and users who rely on your directory daily.
