Fatinfo made the switch to a free web directory to capture the increase traffic the site has been getting. Another reason is to quickly build upon the strong listings previously submitted to the health niche directory. We believe that with the strong spam filters already in place, the quality of the submissions will be maintained at a high level.

Reason to operate a free web directory vs. niche:

1. Site Traffic - a general free web directory compared to a niche directory gets at least five fold the traffic because it covers every base. Once a niche has every site in the industry included, then submissions start to trickle down.
2. Increased Growth - as more submissions are added to the site, the amount of pages grow exponentially leading to new categories to fill a need. Instead of making one site submission, webmasters on average make five to ten submissions on any given visit.
3. Brand Recognition - when more people use the site for submissions, they will gradually begin to recognize the domain name.
4. Advertising Revenue - more eyeballs equate to more revenue. Increase page views and clicks of ads generate increases in revenue stream.
5. Increased Quality - with so many entries to choose from, it becomes easier to delete or ban borderline sites because there are always ten other sites queuing for a permanent lisiting into the directory.

Off Topic: Made the mistake of deleting a category and losing some site entries in the switching over process, but good thing made a backup just before it happened. Still having a little trouble getting the entries loaded back into the database. Even if we have to cut and paste all the missing entries back in, it will be done it because we hate wasting quality site submissions that people spent time on.
